Why do I have to pay taxes; I do not recall attending a conference where I had to?

In Canada, most products and services are taxed. In some provinces, a harmonized sales tax is applied. In Ontario, federal and provincial sales taxes are separate (for now). If you attended a conference in Canada before and do not recall paying taxes, you most likely did, but they would have been 'hidden' within the cost of the registration and other activities you signed up for. As a federal institution, we are required by law to clearly show the applicable taxes and collect them for our governments. This is why they are calculated separately and not hidden within the registration cost for this conference.

* Conference registration includes a tote bag with conference materials (including a water bottle, a travel mug and a pen), access to all programmed sessions and symposia (SPNHC & CBA), the Icebreaker Soirée, one of the Society Mixers at the newly-renovated Canadian Museum of Nature (Victoria Memorial Museum Building), and coffee breaks and lunches planned as part of the Wednesday to Friday programmed activities. Field trips, tours, banquets, and workshops are optional.
