CMA Travel Bursary for Workshop Attendance

The Canadian Museums Association Travel Bursaries are available to assist Canadian museum professionals to attend the workshops to be held on June 05, 2010. SPNHC’s Travel Grant Program (NOW CLOSED FOR 2010)

The Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections (SPNHC) is pleased to announce a NEW Travel Grant Program designed to assist members with the costs of attending the Society’s annual meeting. The first grants will be available for attendance at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the Society in Ottawa.

A total of $3,000 has been allocated to the program and grants will be for a minimum of $750 USD each. The deadline for application is March 31st, 2010. Some conditions apply.

CBA-ABC Travel Awards (NOW CLOSED FOR 2010)

Awardees will be notified prior to the meeting, and travel awards will be formally presented at the CBA-ABC Banquet, 4 June 2010.

John Macoun Graduate Student Travel Bursary & Keith Winterhalder Undergraduate Travel Award

Awards established to provide partial financial assistance for travel to the Annual Meeting to a student (or students) presenting a paper in the Lionel Cinq-Mars competition or a poster in the Taylor competition.

Eligibility:

1. Open to all student members of CBA/ABC. (Not yet a member of CBA/ABC? Apply here).

2. Students must present a paper (Lionel Cinq-Mars competition) or a poster (Taylor competition) at the Annual CBA/ABC Meeting.

3. No student may receive more than one travel bursary while registered for the same degree.

4. Students must apply no later than the submission deadline for abstracts to the Annual Meeting.

5. The application must contain the following documents:

  a.  A copy of the abstract of the paper to be given at the Annual Meeting in the Cinq-Mars Competition;

  b.  A supporting letter from the student's Supervisor of research that also includes a statement that the student is engaged in a MSc. or

       Ph.D. program;

  c.  The student's curriculum vitae (one page);
  d.  A letter of recommendation from a member of the student's research committee (not the Supervisor)

CBA-ABC Student Poster and Presentation Awards

Awards will be presented at the CBA-ABC Banquet, 4 June 2010.

Lionel Cinq-Mars Award

Award for the best oral presentation by a student of his or her own research, as a contributed paper at the Annual Meeting.

Eligibility:

Any bona fide undergraduate or graduate student enrolled at a Canadian institution of higher learning, as well as Canadian students at foreign institutions, are eligible. Every effort will be made to ensure that each student in the competition has a fair evaluation and an equal chance of winning the award. Oral presentations will be evaluated by a panel of judges (at least one from each CBA/ABC section) chaired by the President-Elect. The merit of each paper will be judged on the basis of content (60%) and presentation (40%). All students who wish to compete for this award must indicate this by checking the appropriate box on the abstract form.

Abstracts must be submitted for the 2010 Annual Meeting at which the student will compete for the Award.

Iain and Sylvia Taylor Award

Award for the best student research poster presented at the CBA Annual Meeting.

Eligibility:

Any bona fide (under-)graduate Canadian student enrolled at a Canadian institution of higher learning, as well as Canadian students at foreign institutions, are eligible. Every effort will be made to ensure that each student in the competition has a fair evaluation and an equal chance of winning the award.

Posters will be evaluated by a panel of judges chaired by the Vice-President of CBA/ABC. All students who wish to compete for this award must indicate this by checking the appropriate box on the abstract form.

Abstracts must be submitted for the 2010 Annual Meeting at which the student will compete for the Award.

CBA-ABC Awards for Papers Published by Students in 2009

Awards will be presented at the CBA-ABC Banquet, 4 June 2010.

Alf Erling Porsild Memorial Prize for the best student paper in in Systematics and Phytogeography

Award honouring the memory of the eminent Arctic botanist Alf Erling Porsild. Applications/nominations for students who published a paper in plant systematics and/or phytogeography (as senior author) during the previous year should be sent to the current Chair of the Systematics and Phytogeography Section of the CBA/ABC (Dr. Tim Dickinson, Royal Ontario Museum; e-mail: tim.dickinson@utoronto.ca) before April 1st 2010.

 

J. Stan Rowe Award for the best student paper in Plant Ecology

Award established to celebrate the life and work of Stan Rowe, eminent Canadian Plant Ecologist. Applications/nominations for students who published a paper in plant ecology in 2007 should be sent to the current Chair of the Ecology Section of the CBA/ABC (Dr. Liette Vasseur, Brock University; e-mail: lvasseur@brocku.ca) before April 1st, 2010.

 

Taylor A. Steeves Award for the best student paper in Plant Development, Structure or Morphology

Award established to honour Taylor Steeves’ numerous contributions to the CBA/ABC and botany. Applications/nominations for students who published a paper in 2008 in plant development, structure or morphology should be sent to the current chair of the Plant Development Section of the CBA/ABC (Dr. Jane Young, University of Northern British Columbia; e-mail: youngj@unbc.ca.) before April 1st, 2010.

 

Luella K. Weresub Memorial Award for the best student paper in Fungal Biology

Award established in memory of Dr. Luella Kayla Weresub, a well-known Canadian mycologist who worked at the Biosystematics Research Institute of Agriculture Canada. The award is open to all undergraduate or graduate students working on fungi. Applications/nominations for students who published a paper in fungal biology in 2007 should be sent to the current chair of the Mycology Section (Dr. Hugues Massicotte, University of Northern British Columbia; e-mail: hugue@unbc.ca) before April 1st, 2010.

CBA-ABC Awards (regular members)

The Lawson Medal

Awarded annually in two categories of eligibility:

(A) Recognition of a single outstanding contribution to botanical knowledge (monograph, book or series of papers) by a Canadian botanist at

     any stage of his/her career, and

(B) Recognition of cumulative, lifetime contributions to Canadian botany by a senior researcher, teacher or administrator.

The Lawson Medal, the most prestigious award of the CBA/ABC, was established "to provide a collective, formal expression of the admiration and respect of botanists in Canada for excellence in the contribution of an individual to Canadian botany". It is named in honour of Dr. George Lawson, who is generally regarded as Canada's first professional botanist. 

Mary E. Elliott Award

Award is given to an individual for meritorious service to CBA/ABC.

This award was first awarded in 1978 in memory of Mary E. Elliott, who was a victim of homicide in September, 1976. She had just completed four consecutive years of service on the Board of Directors (as Secretary, Vice President and President), and was just at the beginning her term as Past President at the time of her death. Mary Elliott was a plant pathologist and mycologist who spent 28 years with Agriculture Canada at the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa. She was well known for her work on the taxonomy and biology of the Sclerotiniaceae.
